ABOUT STEEL WELLBEING

Movement for Life

Steel Wellbeing is a Kent-based physiotherapy and clinical Pilates practice, founded by Kim Steel.

I’m Kim. I qualified as a physiotherapist in 2010. I like to create a welcoming, calm environment to assess, treat or teach (I am aware that any medical setting can be daunting for some). I am a friendly, outgoing, thorough person, and I keep up-to-date through regular courses, online medical journals or forums and peer discussions about unusual patient presentations.

Initially, I was involved in sports, working with the Fawkham football team and Gravesend rugby club. Since then, I have specialised in whiplash-associated disorders - working in a medico-legal environment for KTB Pilates and Physiotherapy. I also started teaching Pilates through KTB.

Following that, I took a sabbatical to volunteer as a Physiotherapist in Belize, working for Hillside Health Care International. Here I had to specialise in all disciplines and conditions! We set up temporary clinics in villages for those who couldn't access health care.

An array of musculoskeletal conditions and their treatment were covered while working for Premier Physio in GP surgeries, where I also trained in acupuncture.

Paediatrics was my real passion; helping children less able to reach their milestones was incredibly rewarding, and I trained in hydrotherapy, working at the Royal deaf school in Margate.

Finally, orthopaedic skills were learnt from the BMI hospitals, The Chaucer in Canterbury and The Somerfield in Maidstone. I was also able to continue providing acupuncture, hydrotherapy and Pilates. I have certifications for sports massage (Proactive), acupuncture (Allied) and Pilates (APPI) as well as my BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from the University of East London.

I aimed to go fully self-employed in 2020, but Covid and lockdowns put a stop to that! So, I ventured into NHS hospitals for the first time since qualifying as a physiotherapist, putting myself on the "frontline" to do what I could to help, during unprecedented times. I was humbled by the team dynamics; the courage and positivity of teammates, despite the adversity, were inspiring. I therefore changed my mind about working for the NHS and continued with them until we were lucky enough to start our family. Now, once again, I feel it is time to try being fully self-employed for the flexibility of fitting around childcare.

So that's the official, formal info. View my 1st blog, "The best bits of my physio journey" for a more fun side of me! 😉

I have been going to Kim's class for 9 weeks. I was nervous at the beginning, never having done a circuit class before. But from the first session Kim put me at ease. She is kind, professional and has a wonderful way of helping and guiding. She adapts each exercise to the person. It is like having 1 to1 help. Kim's classes have really helped me physically and built my confidence. I would highly recommend her classes. Thank you Kim.

5 Stars. Would recommend

ALICIA DAGNALL

I joined Kim's Pilates sessions during lockdown over zoom. I was pregnant and in an awful lot of discomfort. Kim was patient, caring, knowledgeable and her care of me can only be described as person centred. I'm really greatful for the time she spent listening to me and coaching me. I wholeheartedly recommend her sessions to anyone looking to do Pilates, beginners or seasoned pros would enjoy working with her. I bet she's even better in face to face sessions. 5 stars without question! ( Plus she has cracking taste in music). 👍

MICHELLE GUIDA

Kim is a brilliant Pilates teacher. I have been attending her classes on and off for about five years now. I had seen many other practitioners and attended several Pilates classes before finding hers, and her teaching is by far the best. She explains every exercise clearly and always makes sure you are doing it correctly. The classes are relaxing, informative, and friendly. I would strongly recommend her classes to anyone looking to improve their strength, flexibility, and overall wellbeing.

ABI LUCAS

I'm really enjoying my pilates sessions with Kim. Pilates was recommended by my osteopath, after experiencing lower back pain and noticing a weakness in my core. I now have little to no pain and I am sleeping much better. Kim is super knowledgeable and her instructions are easy to follow.

FIONA POINTER

I have been going to Kim’s classes for several years now. Kim always makes sure you are doing each exercise correctly so you get the maximum benefit. As she is a physiotherapist if you have any injuries she can help you find the best way to do an exercise. I really enjoy theses friendly classes and I always leave feeling my body is working better

SAM TC

Absolutely love Pilates with Kim! Lovely small classes with lots of 1:1 help, I’ve noticed a difference with my post-baby back problems already!

JENNA DONOVAN-SHARPE

I've been suffering with hip pain for years and after trying a number of physios and doctors with no diagnosis or help in sight I asked Kim to have a look. She was very professional and talked me through each step, gave me exercises and stretches to try as well as massaging the area - literally releasing years of stiffness and pain! Her online pilates classes were a lifesaver in lockdown too, I'm looking forward to getting back to them to keep improving my fitness.

BRENDA BUTCHER

Just wanted to let you know that since I saw you I have had no problems with my leg/hip. Very pleased. Disappointed I can't get to Pilates the week you are doing the goodies. Hope it's successful and wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Thank you again.

ANNETTE BALLARD

I used to go to Pilates many years ago but since moving to Herne Bay I have struggled to find a small friendly class. Kim started her classes and they are perfect for me. The classes are small, so there is plenty of one to one guidance. Plenty of encouragement and support, with great explanation of each exercise: what it's for and the different levels you can work at. Kim is always welcoming, smiling and full of encouragement. Her classes are well worth coming to.

Sarah Bailie

Kim is a most talented practitioner and I couldn’t recommend her more highly! Instinctive in approach and putting clients immediately at ease, she is quick to establish physical challenges of the individual and formulate effective exercise plans to address their needs. Kim has devised programmes to promote healing of a range of conditions in my own family, to include a slipped disc, groin strain and complex muscular pains. Her Pilates classes are also excellent and brilliant fun - I don’t know where we’d be without her expertise!

Molly B.

I’ve had three slipped discs in three years I’ve been working with Kim for about four months now (Aug 2018) and I have no more back issues after doing Pilates. I would recommend this to anyone with back issues.

Gregory Davidson

Within a few weeks of starting Kim's classes, I had significant improvement with back problems. The size of the classes enables individual attention and allows students to work at the level they are comfortable with.
